after the fight

Submitted by Jens Pulver on Mon, 01/26/2009 - 10:31.

well shit. damn that body shot hurt like no other and damned if I fell into his choke, and well fight is over. I never meant to get all emotional in the interview after the fight but when he asked me if I am still relevant it got me thinking. I could hear the crowd and boy I have to tell you it was loud and really started to move me inside that cage. Thus the F bomb at the end, I guess I was saying that to myself just happened to be out loud. There is nothing but doubt running through my mind, wondering if I am hanging on to long or am I really just at the point of turning things around. I do feel great when I am getting prepared, just had so many things going against me this time it was tough to get away for a good solid two months to give myself the best chance of winning. I do not know where I am gonna go from here and I do not know if you all just watched the last fight for lil evil. I know this I have battled all they put in front of me and I know I have always tried to do my best out there. I have been open and honest for the most part when talking and answering any question asked. I love this sport and I have loved watching it grow and become bigger and bigger as each month passes. I guess it is time to just go home and figure out where to go next. I can say this it has been an honor to fight in front of all of you who have taken the time watch and all of you who take the time to come on here and say whats up. I wish you all the best in the world. again my apologies to my family, my camp at AMC and to my fans.

Keep up the fighting Jens. Get that confidence back up. You are one of the only reasons I watch MMA anymore. You're a tough fighter who has always never quit no matter what. In any sport people will go through slumps for whatever reason if nothing else but bad luck.

No one can win all the time, it took me a long time to learn that. Have faith in yourself, We all have faith in you. Good luck against Josh Grispi.

don't make this your last fight, you still have it, i'd like to see you get a knockout and then get some finishing fights in the UFC. i know it's not likely, but it would be awesome if you got in the cage with bj penn and knocked his ass back to hawaii. jens, if anything you should win some fights and get in contact with dana white, cuz you deserve to be in the UFC hall of fame, i mean weren't you the first lightweight champion? anyway best wishes to you, i hope you don't retire yet

I never wrote fan mail before, but I am a Jens fan. I think you are the best fighter. You aint old he just slipped one in on ya. I see you have a book and I am real interested in getting a copy. It looks like you have overcome stuf that most people would never survive. My life aint been easy either but you are a TV star and got books ritten about you. You aint old Jens. It might sound funny but when I lift weights and work out I think about you fighting and overcoming those guys who all got million dollar gyms and stuf. I aint gay but I like you like a hero. Life aint easy and if more people took charge like you maybe it wouldnt be as hard. I hope you get your Jeep back soon. It looks like it will be really cool. Thank you for havin a website and being the best fighter. Don't think you are old just because that guy slipped one in on ya. He done lost his belt and he dont have any cool tattoos either.
Thanks again for being a hero and reading my fan mail.

Jens,

I never really watched fighting.. I didn't think it was real interesting... Until my boyfriend (now fiance) came along. The first fight I ever saw was you. And right away I was excited. From the way you talked in your interviews, Your confidence, and the determination in your face. And when you get in that cage, you leave it all in the cage, and that excites me. My favorite thing about you is the respect you show to every single opponent you face. Not only are you an amazing fighter, but this shows your fans youre a pretty amazing guy too. Keep youre head up. =] We all know everything happens for a reason.

Hope all goes well.

Jens,
I hope we have not seen your last fight. I was a fan before the Ultimate Fighter show, but the way you carried yourself even through Penn's B.S. was a real testament to the man you are. Your character and will are awesome and I hope to see you on top again. You deserve to go out on your terms. Thanks for making MMA what it is.

I know you have been fighting for a long darn time and you may have needed to devote more time to family, i just wish you would come back to iowa and train like the warrior that you are. You have made fighters who they are today and they made you. It takes a good camp team and family to make a fighter, not just any fight camp.

Hey, Mr. Pulver...I am a big fan...loved watching you stuff take downs of some great title holders in the ufc and wec...knock some heads off with technical striking...and last against champions for five insane rounds...I just think if you found a way to really be hungry for the competition and the win...regardless of a belt...no one would stop you. Regardless of the win your fights are full of skill and awsome to watch.

Jens,

Get your ass back to Iowa brother we miss you here. I think what may make you most relevant in this sport is your heart, honesty and talent. You really put yourself out there man. You let us know where you come from, what you have been through and how you have changed your life. That is why I have become a Jens Pulver fan. I have watched this sport from its conception. I used to make fun of Pat and Mark when they were toying around with this stuff in the beginning. I remember renting the tapes at the video store. This sport has evolved so much. You are part of the group that laid the ground work. You fight whomever they put in front of you. My god "relevant"? Your loses lately have come at the hands of BJ Penn, Uriah Faber (2) and Leonard Garcia. There is no shame in that! Only thing I wished was that they and Monte let you get back on track before taking on such huge fights. Your stepping in against the best ranked fighters in the world. Your in that group. NEVER let anyone tell you different. Get your head right, take a couple more fights and see where your at. Then go out on your terms if it is what YOU want. JENS your relevant in this sport for more than the punches you throw in the cage. You make an impact on peoples lives by showing them no matter where you come from you can obtain greatness. Like I said your family is here in Iowa, come home and continue building your future. Iowa is a great place to raise your family and the other family here could use your help as well.

I thought I read somewhere on your blog that you were going to open a gym somewhere? What ever became of that? I've been following you since you first started and am a big fan. I think it is fair to say that the caliber of fighters out there right now are are not the same as when you first started, I think you know that. Right now you have a huge fan base, you need to take advantage of that and start investing in your future, because if your honest with yourself, it's not fighting anymore. You need to start looking at other avenues. Rocky Balboa speeches only go so far, if you constantly get beat up, it's not going to matter anymore. I don't think your the type of guy who likes being taken pity on. I'm going to be blunt and say get off your ass and open up that gym, use your established name and create a future for that new family of yours.

Speaking of which, whatever happened to Critical Gear, or was it Medalist? I forget, and cant keep up anymore. What the hell is going on with your career? More importantly, what are your plans for the future? What do you have besides stepping into the octagon? How long is that going to last? I've read your book, and I also happen to be studying psychology in school. I think there is more to you than meets the eye. I don't think what the general public sees is the true you (it's the only the part you want them to see). I think you talk a good game and play the underdog and the public very well. I believe you are a different person to those that are close to you and are not capable of commitment. I think you have trust issues, I think you are self defeating (the grass is always greener), and change your mind like underwear. I hate to say it, but you need to take some lessons from Faber. That boy has his head screwed on right. He could stop fighting today and still have a very secure future through his investments.

If Jens had trust issues would he open up his life to the world and stand and visit with fans for hours on end?

Go back to school, Freud. Maybe try your noobish psycho-analytical spew on someone you know or think you know but really don't. Faber owns 5 houses on the same block and lives with 15 fighters and he's 30 years old... But, I'm not gonna judge someone I don't know.. I guess that's where you think you need to step in... do us all a favor and don't.

My wife bought us tickets to WEC 38 for Christmas. It was my first live MMA event, even though I've been a fan for some time. San Diego doesn't get the big shows, I think this really was basically the first big MMA show we've had.

Bro, I can tell you, we were there to see you fight, you're one of our favorite fighters, and win or lose we will always support you. Don't feel like you let your fans down! You went out there and you fought your best. That's all you can do, and MMA is such an unpredictable sport. Man, we all saw you bear Cub Swanson, and we all saw you go FIVE rounds with Uriah, broken hand and all! This time, it didn't go the distance, but that doesn't mean you're done, my man.

Whatever you decide to do from here, know that you didn't let your fans down, we've been seeing you fight for a long time, some legendary battles, and you've given everything. My wife and I wish you the best, regardless of what you decide to do. We, selfishly, would love to see you fight again! And "f*** that" is right, man, you are still relevant! You're a warrior.

-Jared from San Diego.

Yo Jens i just wanted to say going into the fight i am a Faber supporter, but even more im a fighter supporter. I was sitting in the stands in San Diego and even though my guy won the fight i was shocked to hear the question that rang everyone's ears about you being "relevant to the sport" i couldn't believe he would ask that, and so the people i came with including myself were cheering for you for the fact that you are relevant and in my opinion the interviewer had to right to ask you that question after the fight. Your show of class after the loss and heart made me a Pulver fan. I hope to see you fight in the future and will be supporting you in the face of the odds. Don't give up man you are a fighter for a reason.

Jens, I went to this fight and it was an honor to see you in there, win lose or draw. I saw that body shot from the nosebleeds and I saw in your eyes that you wanted to push through it. Like you said, **** happens. I've been following you for some years now ever since you went to Japan and I got hooked and started watching your old tapes.

Thanks for shaking my hand and taking a picture with me even though you had to run to a press conference. The picture came up blurry, I hope you're in California again sometime so I can get a better picture, but as long as I have the memory of meeting you then that makes me feel good.

Wanderlei Silva lost 3 fights in a row, one by decision, two by KO and he came back to knock Jardine out. He might've lost to Rampage but he still came back after the losses and beat someone top. You're more than capable of making that happen. You need to start hating your opponents again. It's not wrong Jens, you can apologize and love them after you knock them out.

Jens,

Just remember that win, lose, or draw, God is still waiting for you no matter what your record is. Also remember that the message might get blurred by people who don't understand you, but Jesus' original message still speaks clearly.

Was his seed laid on fertile ground or on rocky dry soil that will never accept it?

You are a great person and you are loved by many. Let it all go and take a deep breath because your friends are always going to care no matter what happens in the ring. If it's in your heart to go back and fight it will speak clear as a bell to you.

You trained as well as you could have in the time given, you stepped foot into the cage and you did what you came there to do; fight. Nobody can take that from you; never can and never will. You are apart of the history of Mixed Martial Arts; always will be. Never forget that, as for your career in the cage; if you choose to keep fighting, I am in full support of that and will continue to have your back through thick and thin. Screw the critics, you are a veteran of Mixed Martial Arts. Thanks to you--these 155 pounders have a weight division to play around in--all thanks to Lil' Evil; they all should be calling you 'Daddy'. Real talk, my friend. Take it easy.

Keep up the great work and enjoy life.

Suck it up Jens, it's just a loss, everybody gets caught sometimes bro. It looked like a Liver punch to me, that would have dropped most guys right then, shit happens, it's a fight, you just never know. Anyone could land a lucky shot at anytime. Look at the Rashad and Chuck fight. There is no one saying he is not relevant for sure, he will be back and so will you. This just sucks because all my favorite fighters are losing lately, Hughes, Couture, Chuck, now you. This tells us one thing, you have to evolve!!!!! You need to train with better people bro. I think Greg Jackson is one of the best right now, ever thought about training there???? It's gotten to the point where all the veteran fighters have become predictable in my opinion, and there is too much footage out there on you guys. I think there is always more to be learned. Evolve Jens, or you will become irrelevant my friend. I hope that is not the path you choose though. I read your book, what a story bro, unreal, no wonder your such a tough lil bastard. Don't question yourself bro, you have the drive and talent, you just need to evolve. Your friend and fan, Kevin Tomman@ kevintomman@yahoo.com

"my apologies to my family, my camp at AMC and to my fans."

No apologies neccessary Jens. To go through what you went through & still get into the cage and fight another world class fighter...you win. You are definetly relevant and can beat anyone on any given night. You looked good out there until you got hit in the liver...ouch! I've heard and read your recent interviews (pre-fight) and you have been expanding your skillset so I hope you keep fightig so we can see what you've learned and how Lil Evil puts his own stamp on it. The fans in San Diego were pretty harsh to some of the fighters that nght but they showered you with love & respect & we want you to keep fighting Jens but whatever you decide your fans will support you.

P.S. Congratulations on the birth of your Son!

Jens, I know what fighting can do to the body and I know that you have put yourself through unthinkable amounts of pain to get yourself into peak physical condition before each fight again and again. We did not witness what may be Lil' Evil's last fight, not even close. You have a lot of work still ahead of you. You have the ability to keep working, keep yourself in top physical condition, and to get back in the cage if you are up to it. Give yourself some time to rest, clear your head, and to relax with your family and friends. Thre are guys with 10-15 years age on you still getting in that cage and doing what they love to do. You've lost before and still got back in the cage; two of your last three losses were to a champion. Don't get down on yourself about that, and don't have shallow hopes for your future in MMA. Your friends and fans will wait patiently while you figure out what you're going to do.

Don't short change yourself Jens, you should atleast give it one more go, with a FULL training camp at AMC. Then see how you do? There was a lot going on for you to get distracted, and also Faber is a fucking freak, you took him the distance and had a short camp that cost you, but the game plan seemed to be working. Outside of Faber, you just got caught with a punch from Garcia.

None of those show an aging fighter, it just shows someone who needs to regroup and Matt Hume is the guy to do it for you. Whatever your decision though you have people still with you.

Even though you lost you looked great out there. This was the first time in a long time Lil Evil was in the ring. You were aggressive, you hurt him and he could not take you down. If you would have had the chance to train properly that body shot would probably not have bothered you. Don't worry about losing, that happens to everyone. I look forward to seeing you fight again but hopefully not until May.

Like some other commenters here, I was pissed when he asked you that. That's a pretty weak question to ask anyone, much less a legend.

Rest up and do whatever you want, man. If you fight, you know we'll all be here to watch you win. If not, you'll always be a legend, and there is plenty more to do!

In my opinion you're done fighting.
You're not in the UFC, and probably done in the WEC.
Anywhere else is no money.
The rematch had to be in the contract because you offered nothing close to beating Faber the first time.
Maybe you should've been in the gym instead of working on your black accent.
You get no sympathy from me in a sport where the best prepared and the best technique usually wins.
I'm gonna be honest, I won $5,000 from betting on Faber in the rematch. I watched your post fight from the first fight and knew I had to scrape together the cash because you would lose the second match.
You're not Randy Couture by a long shot. Better start getting your ass in gear to become a 9 to 5 worker. Too bad you probably have no skills to speak of. I see suicide watch in your future.

He also has a degree, like 80% of professional MMA fighters. Quit lying, you did not win money. If you really had any balls you would say it to his face. Instead of pathetically hiding behind the net. You probably live at home with your mom still and stopped by here before you visit redtube.com cause no chick wants to be with you.
